Onyx – (Root Chakra) – (Zodiac of Leo)
Onyx is such a strong and powerful stone, yet it is supportive and comforting at the same time. This is one stone I am attracted to when I just feel “off” and don’t know what I need to get back on track. I highly recommend having some Onyx on hand for those times that feel scary, or you just feel adrift. The Science of Onyx
Onyx is part of the Chalcedony family and is best known for its deep, solid black varieties. However, Onyx can also be found as a black and white banded variety (sometimes called Sardonyx). Onyx is very much like Carnelian (also a member of the Chalcedony family) because it comes in solid orange and also banded varieties. I have tumbled Onyx that has multi-colored banding, so there is a great variation in Onyx above and beyond the solid black stones.
Historical Significance of Onyx
The name is derived from the Latin word (also onyx) meaning “claw” or “fingernail.” Onyx has been widely used throughout history to make tools, bowls, and carved jewelry. The Egyptians, Ancient Greek and Romans all used Onyx because of its strength and beauty. Ancient Romans carved amulets with the image of Mars, the God of War, for soliers to wear into battle. Onyx is also one of the gemstones mentioned as a Holy Stone in the Bible.
Metaphysical Attributes of Onyx
Onyx is used to absorb what we need from the Universe. It is used to cleanse and sharpen the intuition, so we can better receive this Higher Guidance. If you are having difficulties determining your next step, how to solve a problem, or what you need to feel better – sit with Onyx, release any urges to “figure it out,” and allow Onyx to bring what you need to mind. Carrying Onyx will help to amplify and multiply the external signs from the Universe providing you with guidance. Make sure to journal and record what you observe while carrying Onyx, so you can recognize the advice from the Universe, Spirit Guides, or Angel Guides. Sit in a seated meditation position, holding the Onyx in your less dominant hand to receive its energy. Really feel the support of the cushion or floor beneath you. You are grounded and supported by the Earth’s energies. Imagine you are seated on a Giant Piece of Onyx that is providing stability and support. Then a bright light opens at your Crown and is ready to receive Divine Guidance. Repeat this mantra, “I am Not Afraid. I am Safe. I am ready to Receive the Guidance and Support from my Higher Guides.”
