This is a Jasper I recently tumbled and fell absolutely in love with it! This is a Jasper that is spotted like a Leopard and comes in so many gorgeous colors. In the batch I tumbled there were deep reds, dark pinks, mustard yellow, browns and tans. It is so lovely and soothing to hold! Science of Leopardskin Jasper

Leopardskin Jasper is part of the Orbicular Jasper family. These are Jasper with spots or “orbs” in them. Other examples are Ocean/Sea Jasper, Asteroid Jasper, and Poppy Jasper. This type of Jasper can be found in abundance in Chihuahua, Mexico, but is also mined in Brazil and Africa as well. The stone will look different depending on which mine it comes from. It looks very much like Poppy Jasper, but has much more muted color shades, rather than Poppy Jasper’s bright reds and pinks.

Golden Topaz is one of the birthstones for the month of November (Citrine is the other). I have always associated it with my Grandmothers, who were born in November and very fond of Topaz. Topaz is one of the harder gemstones at Mohs hardness 8, so it wears really well in rings because it is durable. It comes in many color (and even clear), but yellow-gold is the most common. Take care when buying blue or pink topaz, because blue is almost always heat-treated and pink is very rare, so is often color treated.

Historical Significance of Topaz

Today Topaz is primarily mined in Brazil (and found in my home state of Texas), but in the 1800s it was mined heavily in Germany. The name is derived from the Indian word tapas meaning ‘fire’, and from the Arabic word topazos – ‘found’. It has been used throughout history, and all over the world. The royal crown of England is covered in topazes, and many cultures considered it a stone of great wisdom.

This is a newer gemstone on the market and it is a really brilliant stone! Its coloring – black, grey, white, yellow and orange – appear to be a visual representation of the volcano from which it is mined! The Science of Bumblebee Jasper

This gemstone is not actually a Jasper at all. It is comprised of colored bands of Calcite that get their color from sulfur and volcanic ash. Bumblebee “Jasper” (likely named for the black and yellow stripes like bees) is mined in an active volcano! Mount Papandayan, West Java, Indonesia. Given the single location where this stone is found, and its difficulty obtaining it from the hot vents in the volcano, this gemstone is on the pricier side. The tumble stone in the picture above was $20. However, it is a beautiful and powerful stone, so totally worth the cost.

This is a stone that is formed exclusively in Australia. It is often grouped in the Jasper family, but it is not a Jasper. It is a porcellanite. It comes in a mix of red, yellow, white and grey. The colors are formed due to the iron oxide/hydroxide in the soil where it is collected.

This is a rather new addition to the gemstone market. It started appearing in about 2010 and has become quite popular since then. It is names after Mooka Station, in Western Australia, where it was originally discovered.
