Carnelian is a stone I grew up with, so it really brings me back to my childhood. My family would walk along the Oregon Coast with buckets and we’d collect interesting looking stones that had been uncovered by the waves.  We would bring the stones home and put them in the tumbler to polish.  Many of the specimen we collected were Carnelian.  Such a beautiful and rich stone. The Science of Carnelian

Carnelian is a member of the Chalcedony family. You may hear it referred to as Carnelian Agate, and that is correct as well, agate is a subset of the chalcedony family.  It is orange or orange/pink in color and is semi-transparent, so if you hold a piece up to the light, you’ll be able to see the light shine through it.

Historical Significance of Carnelian

Carnelian has a very long history and was used frequently as a protective stone by the Egyptians and to receive boosts of energy and vitality. This gemstone is said to help someone overcome the fear of death which may have come from the Egyptians using Carnelian in tombs as protection in the afterlife.

Energy, energy, energy!  Carnelian spiritual properties are primarily associated with increasing energy, vitality and passion.  Even though it is associated with the Sacral Chakra, which is of the Water element, this gemstone tends to “fire things up.” Like when you place a pot of water over a fire, it produces steam.  If you want things to get “steamy” in your life, keep some Carnelian in your bedroom.

Carnelian doesn’t just inspire passion and vitality in the bedroom, but is also a great source of creative inspiration.  It is known as the Artist’s Stone.  Carnelian sharpens the analytical mind and awakens creativity, so one is able to take n idea from “vision” all the way though to fruition and creation.  This gemstone is perfect for overcoming Writer’s Block. This is a Jasper I recently tumbled and fell absolutely in love with it! This is a Jasper that is spotted like a Leopard and comes in so many gorgeous colors. In the batch I tumbled there were deep reds, dark pinks, mustard yellow, browns and tans. It is so lovely and soothing to hold! Science of Leopardskin Jasper

Leopardskin Jasper is part of the Orbicular Jasper family. These are Jasper with spots or “orbs” in them. Other examples are Ocean/Sea Jasper, Asteroid Jasper, and Poppy Jasper. This type of Jasper can be found in abundance in Chihuahua, Mexico, but is also mined in Brazil and Africa as well. The stone will look different depending on which mine it comes from. It looks very much like Poppy Jasper, but has much more muted color shades, rather than Poppy Jasper’s bright reds and pinks.

Science of Dalmatian Stone

Dalmatian Stone is most commonly called Dalmatian Jasper, but it is not a Jasper at all! This rock is a mixture of Feldspar (light parts) and Arfvedsonite (black parts). At Mohs 6, it is also softer than Jasper (Mohs 7). This stone is readily available and very affordable. It is often sold in a variety of colors, but just know (because of its softer and more porous nature) that all those various colors are DYED. There are no natural blue, pink or green Dalmatian stones.

Historical Significance of Dalmatian Stone

Dalmatian Stone was discovered in Chihuahua, Mexico, and derived its name because the miners thought it resembled the spots on a Dalmatian dog. It has historically been used as a protection stone in necklaces, talisman and amulets.

This is a newer gemstone on the market and it is a really brilliant stone! Its coloring – black, grey, white, yellow and orange – appear to be a visual representation of the volcano from which it is mined! The Science of Bumblebee Jasper

This gemstone is not actually a Jasper at all. It is comprised of colored bands of Calcite that get their color from sulfur and volcanic ash. Bumblebee “Jasper” (likely named for the black and yellow stripes like bees) is mined in an active volcano! Mount Papandayan, West Java, Indonesia. Given the single location where this stone is found, and its difficulty obtaining it from the hot vents in the volcano, this gemstone is on the pricier side. The tumble stone in the picture above was $20. However, it is a beautiful and powerful stone, so totally worth the cost.

This is a stone that is formed exclusively in Australia. It is often grouped in the Jasper family, but it is not a Jasper. It is a porcellanite. It comes in a mix of red, yellow, white and grey. The colors are formed due to the iron oxide/hydroxide in the soil where it is collected.

This is a rather new addition to the gemstone market. It started appearing in about 2010 and has become quite popular since then. It is names after Mooka Station, in Western Australia, where it was originally discovered.

It helps us move forward with confidence and instills a sense of calm during this change. This stone encourages flexibility, versatility, and risk taking. It supports taking the necessary actions to move in your chosen direction.

Mookaite is a stone of the Earth and Nature. It enables you to find support and energy through direct connection to the earth. If you go outside with a piece of Mookaite, it will allow you to feel the energy around you that is alive and infinite.
