As a teenager I lived in Cairo, Egypt, for a few years and became really familiar with Lapis (and Alexandrite, too). I would see it for sale everywhere, as carved statues, inlay, and jewelry. It was one of the first gemstones that really struck me with it’s utter brilliance. Such a rich blue with gold-like specks was a stone I absolutely envisioned for Egyptian royalty. Luckily, this is a fairly accessible stone with a reasonable price range, so we can all enjoy Lapis Lazuli now. The Science of Lapis Lazuli

Lapis Lazuli is primarily composed of a mineral called Lazurite. The Lazurite is combined with a mix of various other minerals, (the “gold” flecks are Pyrite) and the balance of certain minerals does affect the value of a particular stone. There are specimen with more white Calcite mixed in that is less valuable than the deep blue examples with lots of Pyrite. This stone is very sensitive to heat and chemicals, so don’t use a chemical metal cleaner near it, or expose it to hot, soapy water while house cleaning.

Historical Significance of Lapis Lazuli

Lapis is a gemstone that has been revered for ages! Reports of Lapis date back to 5000BC. The name comes from a combination of words – Arabic azul for “sky,” and Latin lapis for “stone.” As it is the color of the sky, people thought they could connect to the Heavens and channel the power of Gods by using Lapis. Leaders all over the world included Lapis Lazuli in worship objects, royal decoration, and in burial tombs and crypts. Ancient Buddhists meditated with Lapis to repel evil thoughts. In the Middle Ages, Lapis was ground down to create the color pigment ‘ultramarine.’

Lapis is a true stone of awakening and awareness. It helps us to access and focus understanding, wisdom, and intuition. This gemstone initiates the wearer into the vast expanse of wisdom and higher awareness; therefore, awakening psychic and intuitive abilities. Lapis helps to focus the mind inward to access our own Inner Wisdom. It also enables us to use the wisdom we have received and reason clearly and objectively. Lapis also connects us to the Divine so we can receive Divine guidance.

This gemstone is a powerful protector. It provides psychic and auric protection from attacks and negative influences. This stone is cleansing and healing. It will purify and strengthen the aura, and it balances all the chakras. This power of purification and shielding will protect us as we open up to the powers of Higher Awareness.

Lapis is also amazing at recovery and emotional healing. It relieves stress and brings deep peace. Lapis releases repressed anger and past life wounds. It alleviates migraines, and brings balance and harmony to mind, body, relationships and environment.

Finally, Lapis Lazuli spiritual properties are associated with the Throat chakra, which rules over expression and our Voice. It encourages open self-expression and honesty. Primarily, it facilitates confronting your own truth and accepting it for what it is. If you are denying and repressing something in your life, Lapis will pull it forth for you to see. This process allows you to confront the issue, release it, and finally be free from it.

Blue Lace Agate is part of the Chalcedony family and is comprised of layers of blue and white agate. It is quite beautiful, but one of the less available stones on the market.
