I continue this series with a stone that is near to my soul – my birthstone.  As a February baby, I’ve always felt a special connection with the stone I came into life associated with.  It is the strongest stone associated with Pisces. The royal purple is my favorite color, and when I’m seeking something soothing and comforting, I will reach for Amethyst. The Science of Amethyst

Amethyst is part of the Quartz family.  The purple coloring comes from small amounts of iron in the crystal, and the depth of color can range from very dark purple to a light lavender. There are various types of Amethyst, such as, Chevron, Rutiliated & Ametrine (Amethyst and Citrine combined).

Historical Significance of Amethyst

Amethyst has quite a long-standing association with alcohol.  The name for Amethyst come from the Greek word “Amethyein,” which means “not drunk.”  In ancient cultures, nobility would place the stone in their wine to try to avoid intoxication.  It is also associate with the deity, Bacchus, the god of wine.  The goddess Diana once protected a maiden named Amethyst from the rage and desires of Bacchus by turning her into a gemstone. Hence, Amethyst is often associated with recovering from addictions.  Carrying an Amethyst on the body can help to ward of cravings.  During deep cravings one might want to sit and meditate with a large Amethyst to help one release the feelings of attachment to alcohol.

The Third Eye Chakra is the seat of Amethyst spiritual properties. Amethyst’s realm is the Mind/Universal energy connection. It balances the physical, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual energies. Topaz is one of the harder gemstones at Mohs hardness 8, so it wears really well in rings because it is durable. It comes in many color (and even clear), but yellow-gold is the most common. Take care when buying blue or pink topaz, because blue is almost always heat-treated and pink is very rare, so is often color treated.

Historical Significance of Topaz

Today Topaz is primarily mined in Brazil (and found in my home state of Texas), but in the 1800s it was mined heavily in Germany. The name is derived from the Indian word tapas meaning ‘fire’, and from the Arabic word topazos – ‘found’. It has been used throughout history, and all over the world. The royal crown of England is covered in topazes, and many cultures considered it a stone of great wisdom.

Turquoise is a copper aluminum phosphate that is mined in a few places in the world. Genuine Turquoise is mined primarily is New Mexico, Arizona (USA), Tibet, and Iran. It is found a few other places, but these are the most common. The name Turquoise came from the phrase “Turkish stone” because the trade route to Europe passed through Turkey.

**Warning!** Make sure you are purchasing Turquoise from a reputable dealer!! Many sellers dye white stones blue, especially Howlite and Magnesite, and call it Turquoise. There is also a myriad of “pressed” Turquoise available. This is when smaller turquoise bits are hydraulically pressed with metals and stabilized to make a new, larger piece of turquoise.

Turquoise has an ancient history as being a protective talisman against harm and disease. It has been found in tombs in Ancient Egypt and Greece. Egypt actually depleted their Turquoise mine in 2000 B.C. Hildegard von Bingen, a famous prophet born in 1098 A.D., used it in her healing practices.
