K2 Azurite “Ketonite” – (Third Eye Chakra) (Zodiac of Sagittarius)

For this latest blog post we’re digging into a fairly newly discovered stone! K2 Stone (also known as Ketonite) was found less than a decade ago in the foothills at the base of the K2 mountain. K2, or Mount Godwin Austen, is the second-highest mountain in the world and is home to it’s very own special and unique gemstone.  It’s a fairly remote and harsh location, so there isn’t a huge production of stones in the market. The Science of K2 Stone

I was just stunned when I first saw this stone.  It just doesn’t seem real and looks dyed, but I assure you it is not.  The blue spots are Azurite.  The blue Azurite really “pops” against the white and black granite. Some specimen even have very small dots of Malachite as well. Often called “K2 Jasper,” it’s not a Jasper at all – it is a granite.

Historical Significance of K2 Stone

There isn’t much history to the stone itself, since it was just discovered, but Azurite has a lengthy history as a sacred stone. The Native Americans used it to assist contact with one’s Spirit Guides.  Mayans also used Azurite to manifest psychic abilities, mystical powers, and telepathy.

Metaphysical Attributes of K2 Azurite Stone

K2 Stone works extremely well with the Third Eye Chakra.  It bridges the gap between Crown and Throat Chakra and is intensified in the middle at the Third Eye. The Science of Blue Aventurine

Aventurine is a quartz with mica inclusions that provide the color and some sparkle. Depending on the type of inclusion, this stone can come in many different colors: blue, peach, yellow and more.  The inclusions that give this Aventurine its blue color is Dumortierite, so Blue Aventurine is often sold AS Dumortierite, but it is a combination of quartz, mica and trace Dumortierite. Blue Quartz and Blue Aventurine look very similar so it can be difficult to tell them apart, but Aventurine should have either some sparkle, or streaks of white mica visible to the eye.

In Ancient Greece, the stone was sewn into the clothes of warriors to inspire courage.  In shamanic cultures, this stone was used in medicine wheel rituals to connect with the loving energy of the spirit guides and gods.

As a teenager I lived in Cairo, Egypt, for a few years and became really familiar with Lapis (and Alexandrite, too). I would see it for sale everywhere, as carved statues, inlay, and jewelry. It was one of the first gemstones that really struck me with it’s utter brilliance. Such a rich blue with gold-like specks was a stone I absolutely envisioned for Egyptian royalty. Luckily, this is a fairly accessible stone with a reasonable price range, so we can all enjoy Lapis Lazuli now. The Science of Lapis Lazuli

Lapis Lazuli is primarily composed of a mineral called Lazurite. The Lazurite is combined with a mix of various other minerals, (the “gold” flecks are Pyrite) and the balance of certain minerals does affect the value of a particular stone. There are specimen with more white Calcite mixed in that is less valuable than the deep blue examples with lots of Pyrite. This stone is very sensitive to heat and chemicals, so don’t use a chemical metal cleaner near it, or expose it to hot, soapy water while house cleaning.

Historical Significance of Lapis Lazuli

Lapis is a gemstone that has been revered for ages! Reports of Lapis date back to 5000BC. The name comes from a combination of words – Arabic azul for “sky,” and Latin lapis for “stone.” As it is the color of the sky, people thought they could connect to the Heavens and channel the power of Gods by using Lapis. Leaders all over the world included Lapis Lazuli in worship objects, royal decoration, and in burial tombs and crypts. Ancient Buddhists meditated with Lapis to repel evil thoughts. In the Middle Ages, Lapis was ground down to create the color pigment ‘ultramarine.’

Blue Lace Agate is part of the Chalcedony family and is comprised of layers of blue and white agate. It is quite beautiful, but one of the less available stones on the market. Sodalite is one of my very favorite stones.  Its blue is so vibrant and majestic.  The stone itself looks like blue and white marble. I’d love to have an entire floor or table made out of this crisp blue “marble.”  There is something calming and soothing about holding this stone. My tensions ease away and I feel like I can breathe.  As it opens the Throat Chakra, I can easily understand how I can take a fuller, natural breath after meditating with Sodalite. Although Sodalite reminds me of marble, it is from the feldspathoid family (Lapis Lazuli is related here).  A stone this vivid blue is truly rare in nature and is the most reasonably priced of all the natural blue stones.

The name came from the Ancient Greek words soda lithos, meaning “salt stone,” because Sodalite contains a fair amount of salt.  The Greeks also considered this a stone of the artists and singers, as it opened the mind and allowed creativity to flow.
