Amethyst – (Third Eye Chakra) – (Zodiac of Pisces)
I continue this series with a stone that is near to my soul – my birthstone. As a February baby, I’ve always felt a special connection with the stone I came into life associated with. It is the strongest stone associated with Pisces. The royal purple is my favorite color, and when I’m seeking something soothing and comforting, I will reach for Amethyst. The Science of Amethyst
Amethyst is part of the Quartz family. The purple coloring comes from small amounts of iron in the crystal, and the depth of color can range from very dark purple to a light lavender. There are various types of Amethyst, such as, Chevron, Rutiliated & Ametrine (Amethyst and Citrine combined).
Historical Significance of Amethyst
Amethyst has quite a long-standing association with alcohol. The name for Amethyst come from the Greek word “Amethyein,” which means “not drunk.” In ancient cultures, nobility would place the stone in their wine to try to avoid intoxication. It is also associate with the deity, Bacchus, the god of wine. The goddess Diana once protected a maiden named Amethyst from the rage and desires of Bacchus by turning her into a gemstone. Hence, Amethyst is often associated with recovering from addictions. Carrying an Amethyst on the body can help to ward of cravings. During deep cravings one might want to sit and meditate with a large Amethyst to help one release the feelings of attachment to alcohol.
Metaphysical Attributes of Amethyst
The Third Eye Chakra is the seat of Amethyst spiritual properties. Amethyst’s realm is the Mind/Universal energy connection. This gem is said to transmute lower energies to higher frequencies. It is well know to help deepen ones meditative experience, open up to greater intuition, increase psychic abilities, and ward off nightmares. Amethyst is a naturally balancing stone. It balances the physical, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual energies. If you are feeling off-balance, Amethyst is a perfect gem to seek, as it “draws energy within for self-healing and self-illumination.”
Physical Healing Benefits of Amethyst
Amethyst has been used to assist to recover from addiction (as previously mentioned), alleviate migraines, and treat acne (by Hildegard von Bingen).
Amethyst Mantra Practice
Sit in seated meditation, holding the Amethyst in your less dominant hand to receive its energy. Really feel the support of the cushion or floor beneath you. You are grounded and supported by the Earth’s energies. Place your attention on the center of your forehead, the Third Eye Chakra, and repeat these words. “I am protected as I open to Higher Wisdom”. Alternately, hold an Amethyst mala and chant this mantra 108 times.
