Carnelian is a stone I grew up with, so it really brings me back to my childhood. My family would walk along the Oregon Coast with buckets and we’d collect interesting looking stones that had been uncovered by the waves.  We would bring the stones home and put them in the tumbler to polish.  Many of the specimen we collected were Carnelian.  Such a beautiful and rich stone. The Science of Carnelian

Carnelian is a member of the Chalcedony family. You may hear it referred to as Carnelian Agate, and that is correct as well, agate is a subset of the chalcedony family.  It is orange or orange/pink in color and is semi-transparent, so if you hold a piece up to the light, you’ll be able to see the light shine through it.

Historical Significance of Carnelian

Carnelian has a very long history and was used frequently as a protective stone by the Egyptians and to receive boosts of energy and vitality. This gemstone is said to help someone overcome the fear of death which may have come from the Egyptians using Carnelian in tombs as protection in the afterlife.

Energy, energy, energy!  Carnelian spiritual properties are primarily associated with increasing energy, vitality and passion.  Even though it is associated with the Sacral Chakra, which is of the Water element, this gemstone tends to “fire things up.” Like when you place a pot of water over a fire, it produces steam.  If you want things to get “steamy” in your life, keep some Carnelian in your bedroom.

Carnelian doesn’t just inspire passion and vitality in the bedroom, but is also a great source of creative inspiration.  It is known as the Artist’s Stone.  Carnelian sharpens the analytical mind and awakens creativity, so one is able to take n idea from “vision” all the way though to fruition and creation.  This gemstone is perfect for overcoming Writer’s Block. It you feel stuck, uninspired, or lethargic, put on a piece of Carnelian jewelry, or wear some in your pocket, and it will help pick you up out of the doldrums.

Finally, this stone is a transmutator.  It is said to transmute negative energy to positive. Quartz includes a very large family of gems and Girasol is only one variety in this family. In fact, it is the most common mineral on Earth! For this reason it has been called “the Grandfather of all Gems.” Although this article is about the Clear variety, quartz also includes Amethyst, Citrine, Rose, Smoky, Snow, Agate, Chalcedony, Aventurine, and many, many more. Iolite is an indigo blue gemstone also known as Cordierite. There are many different qualities of Iolite. Some are facted gemstone quality, while some are more opaque and work better tumbled for meditation use. Very high quality Iolite can be confused with Sapphire. This is a lovely stone to observe in the sunlight as it changes color depending on how the light strikes it. This attribute is known as Pleochroism. Some specimen have a shimmery quality known as Aventurescence.

Ancient Greeks and Romans would use Iolite interchangeably with Sapphire. Native American shamans have used Iolite during vision quests to ensure accurate visions and to not be caught in illusions.

Rhodonite, like Rhodochrosite, is a manganese mineral which causes the pink color in both gemstones. The black streaks in the gemstone are inclusions of manganese oxide.

By far, I have more Selenite in my home that any other gem, crystal or mineral. It is such a wonderful, overall purifying and protective stone and is easy to find in many forms.  Selenite comes in large chunks and wands, but can also be easily carved into statues, candle holders, eggs, and charging plates. If you’re a serious crystal worker, I would recommend having a good collection of Selenite on hand. Selenite is a variety of Gypsum that forms into long, slender crystals.  It is quite delicate and fragile.  You should never clean Selenite with anything but water – no detergents, chemicals or salts – these will dissolve Selenite and cause it to fall apart.

Selenite was named from the Greek word Greek selēnitēs, which means stone of the moon. Its gentle, soothing white color gives the appearance of a glowing moon at night.  I will explain more about Selenite’s storage ability in a later paragraph, but I will insert here that it is said Selenite was utilized heavily during the period of witch trials.  Many magic users were being killed, and the fate of the lineage was of great concern. Magic users would project their knowledge into the crystal to save for future generations, with the intention that when the stone was obtained by the right person, at the right time, that person could access the information in the stone.

Rose Quartz has long been associated with Love.  It was supposedly imbued with the warm, pink color by Eros, God of Love, to inspire love and attraction between people.

This stone is by far the strongest Heart Healer in the crystal world.  The rose quartz spiritual properties are immediate, powerful and can tackle even the earliest traumas. Rose quartz is a stone to wear on you if you are working through break-ups and divorce, when you need some relief from heart break.  It also helps us to work toward forgiveness. Have a friend standing by, or your favorite blanket and soothing music to help ease you back into the world after an emotional release.

Rose quartz is an amazing crystal to encourage self-compassion.  We are often very hard on ourselves; self-critical, unloving, unforgiving, and blaming.  Holding rose quartz, closing your eyes, and breathing deeply will allow our critical feelings about ourselves to soften and release. You are beautiful, you are loving, you are perfect just as you are.  This is the love letter from rose quartz to our souls.

Rose quartz helps us to forgive and love; therefore, inviting peace, soothing and tranquility into our lives.  This helps to reduce stress and tension.  Rose quartz is also said to protect against radiation and improve circulation (which makes this a wonderful crystal during a detox). Finally, rose quartz is also associated with sexuality and desire, so is often used as a stone to promote fertility.  Surrounding your bed with large rose quartz crystals, placing tumbles stones in your pillow case, and wearing rose quartz rings during sex are some suggestions to increase your openness to conception.

Rose Quartz Mantra Practice

Place your attention on your Heart area, imagine a beautiful flower blooming open at your heart, and repeat these words.  “I feel safe to open my heart and accept love that is offered” Alternately, hold a Rose Quartz mala and chant this mantra 108 times.

For a more traditional, Buddhist chanting practice with rose quartz, try a session with “Om Mani Padme Hum.” This is the mantra of the Compassion Buddha and inspires compassion to ourselves and every living being.
