Agates and Jaspers are part pf the Chalcedony family. The easiest way to distinguish an Agate from a Jasper is that Jaspers are completely opaque and agates have some amount of translucency in them. Agate is an ancient stone and has been revered for thousands of years. If receive its name from the Greek philosopher Theophrastus in 3 or 4 BC because it was discovered by the Achates River. Agate was highly prized for its wide variety of colors and patterns, and was cut and carved into amulets and talisman for protection. It has been worn by prophets and priests in Islamic, Babylonian, Egyptian and Greek cultures, and was considered a sacred stone for worship.

Science of Dalmatian Stone

Dalmatian Stone is most commonly called Dalmatian Jasper, but it is not a Jasper at all! This rock is a mixture of Feldspar (light parts) and Arfvedsonite (black parts). At Mohs 6, it is also softer than Jasper (Mohs 7). This stone is readily available and very affordable. It is often sold in a variety of colors, but just know (because of its softer and more porous nature) that all those various colors are DYED. There are no natural blue, pink or green Dalmatian stones.

Historical Significance of Dalmatian Stone

Dalmatian Stone was discovered in Chihuahua, Mexico, and derived its name because the miners thought it resembled the spots on a Dalmatian dog. It has historically been used as a protection stone in necklaces, talisman and amulets.

Aquamarine gets its name from its beautiful water blue color (aqua maris = sea water). Iron is the mineral that adds this color to the gemstone. Aquamarine spiritual properties help us recognize what is holding us back. Maybe a relationship, job, belief, or doubt. This crystal is by far the one I use the most. It combines powerfully with every other stones and is a magnificent amplifier for Reiki healing. I also add one bead of Clear Quartz to all of my healing gemstone bracelets to boost the effects of the primary stone. I have multiple pieces (tumbled, rough, wands, etc.) and some is always within reach! The Science of Clear Quartz

Quartz includes a very large family of gems. In fact, it is the most common mineral on Earth! For this reason it has been called “the Grandfather of all Gems.” Although this article is about the Clear variety, quartz also includes Amethyst, Citrine, Rose, Smoky, Snow, Agate, Chalcedony, Aventurine, and many, many more. Quartz is used in watches and radios because it can produce electromagnetic energy when under physical pressure (piezoelectricity).

Quartz is said to be named after the Slavic word for ‘hard’, but also the Greek word for ‘ice’. Clear Quartz is also known as Rock Crystal. Clear Quartz has been revered for ages. Crystal balls were used for scrying and divination. Japanese cultures considered Quartz a symbol for purity. Native American cultures believed that Quartz housed sentient spirits and would provide them with offerings. In fact, in Central and South America, Clear Quartz was carved into the shape of skulls to represent the spirits within.

It helps clear distractions during meditation, so one can listen deeper and open the Crown Chakra up to receive information from our guides, angels, Higher Self and the Universe. If you are trying to expand your psychic abilities, include Clear Quartz in your practices to relax your energy, dissolve energetic or emotional barriers, and be more receptive to the messages.

Finally, this crystal records the energy it comes in contact with and it can be released or “read” at a later time. It helps to form a conduit to our past lives to help with karmic and soul healing as it holds a memory of “all that was.” This gemstone can be charged with an energy or intention to be used later on. The stone can be filled with the intention of courage, for example, if you have an upcoming event that frightens you. I consider Howlite to be the “underdog” of the gemstone healing world. It’s not all that popular, doesn’t have alot written about it, but it is a tremendously useful and practical stone to wear on a daily basis!

Howlite is often confused with Magnesite because they look very similar, so make sure you are actually purchasing Howlite rather than Magnesite. It can also be dyed to look like Turquoise, so make sure the Turquoise you are purchasing is natural, and not dyed Howlite or Magnesite.

Historical Significance of Howlite

Henry How, from Nova Scotia, discovered this stone in 1868. It was named after him. This stone is found primarily in Nova Scotia, Canada, but there are also mines in California, Nevada, and Turkey.
