I own quite a bit of Iolite jewelry because of it’s lovely blue color that rivals any Sapphire. It is also a wonderful aid to meditation and any practice that I am trying to settle, focus, and go within. The Science of Iolite

Iolite is an indigo blue gemstone also known as Cordierite. There are many different qualities of Iolite. Some are facted gemstone quality, while some are more opaque and work better tumbled for meditation use. Very high quality Iolite can be confused with Sapphire. This is a lovely stone to observe in the sunlight as it changes color depending on how the light strikes it. This attribute is known as Pleochroism. Some specimen have a shimmery quality known as Aventurescence.

Historical Significance of Iolite

Ancient Greeks and Romans would use Iolite interchangeably with Sapphire. Native American shamans have used Iolite during vision quests to ensure accurate visions and to not be caught in illusions.

This stone stimulates the awakening of visions and intuitive abilities. Iolite helps us to access our own Inner Wisdom during meditation. It enhances dream recall and journeying. Iolite spiritual properties help with acceptance – of life situation, responsibility, status of relationships, and the cause of the roadblocks in life. As a teenager I lived in Cairo, Egypt, for a few years and became really familiar with Lapis (and Alexandrite, too). I would see it for sale everywhere, as carved statues, inlay, and jewelry. It was one of the first gemstones that really struck me with it’s utter brilliance. Such a rich blue with gold-like specks was a stone I absolutely envisioned for Egyptian royalty. Luckily, this is a fairly accessible stone with a reasonable price range, so we can all enjoy Lapis Lazuli now. The Science of Lapis Lazuli

Lapis Lazuli is primarily composed of a mineral called Lazurite. The Lazurite is combined with a mix of various other minerals, (the “gold” flecks are Pyrite) and the balance of certain minerals does affect the value of a particular stone. There are specimen with more white Calcite mixed in that is less valuable than the deep blue examples with lots of Pyrite. This stone is very sensitive to heat and chemicals, so don’t use a chemical metal cleaner near it, or expose it to hot, soapy water while house cleaning.

Historical Significance of Lapis Lazuli

Lapis is a gemstone that has been revered for ages! Reports of Lapis date back to 5000BC. The name comes from a combination of words – Arabic azul for “sky,” and Latin lapis for “stone.” As it is the color of the sky, people thought they could connect to the Heavens and channel the power of Gods by using Lapis. Leaders all over the world included Lapis Lazuli in worship objects, royal decoration, and in burial tombs and crypts. Ancient Buddhists meditated with Lapis to repel evil thoughts. In the Middle Ages, Lapis was ground down to create the color pigment ‘ultramarine.’

Lapis is a true stone of awakening and awareness. It helps us to access and focus understanding, wisdom, and intuition. This gemstone initiates the wearer into the vast expanse of wisdom and higher awareness; therefore, awakening psychic and intuitive abilities. Lapis helps to focus the mind inward to access our own Inner Wisdom. It also enables us to use the wisdom we have received and reason clearly and objectively. Lapis also connects us to the Divine so we can receive Divine guidance.

This gemstone is a powerful protector. It provides psychic and auric protection from attacks and negative influences. This stone is cleansing and healing. It will purify and strengthen the aura, and it balances all the chakras. This power of purification and shielding will protect us as we open up to the powers of Higher Awareness.

Lapis is also amazing at recovery and emotional healing. It relieves stress and brings deep peace. Lapis releases repressed anger and past life wounds. It alleviates migraines, and brings balance and harmony to mind, body, relationships and environment.

Finally, Lapis Lazuli spiritual properties are associated with the Throat chakra, which rules over expression and our Voice. It encourages open self-expression and honesty. Primarily, it facilitates confronting your own truth and accepting it for what it is. If you are denying and repressing something in your life, Lapis will pull it forth for you to see. This process allows you to confront the issue, release it, and finally be free from it.

Lepidolite is one of the lesser known gemstones, but it is oh so useful and practical! It is a lovely pink, purple and white sparkly gem. Lepidolite is a potassium lithium aluminum fluoro-silicate. It is one of the primary sources of the metal lithium. One cannot absorb the lithium by touching the stone, but it likely exudes the energy and vibration of the lithium and contributes to its ability to calm someone holding the stone.

This is one of my very favorite new stones.  I learned about it in 2010 and have absolutely adored it ever since.  Purple is my favorite color and this stone has multiple shades! This stone plays with swirls of color, flash and black.  Each piece is different and emits a wonderfully uplifting energy. The Science of Charoite

Charoite comes from only one location, Murun Mountain in Yakutia, Russia. It is a very distinct looking stone with swirls of varying shades of purple and occasionally touched with black. There is sometimes some “flash” or chatoyancy in the stone. It is unmistakable and quite beautiful.

Historical Significance of Charoite

This is a fairly recently discovered stone.  It was initially discovered on the 1940s, but didn’t come to market until the late 1970s.  It has only really become popular as a jeweler’s gem within the last ten years. Geologist’s fear that the exclusivity of its mining location, combined with its new popularity, may soon diminish the supply.

Charoite is most helpful during times of massive change. It helps us to stop, look at a situation as it is, and accept the present moment just as it is. “It is the soul stone that overcomes fear.” It helps us to release overwhelming fear, reduce stress, and enter into a relaxed state.  Often when we are under great stress, we move, move, fix, fix, to try to get rid of the stress, and our actions in this state can aggravate the situation. The Charoite spiritual properties helps us to stop, look at our stressors rationally, and come to acceptance.  Only then can we make wise decisions about how to move forward.
