Stichtite is a gorgeous pink / lilac colored stone that was discovered in Tasmania, Australia. It can be found elsewhere in the world, but is primarily mined in Dundas, Australia. It is also found in deposits with Serpentine, and the combined specimen are known as “Atlantisite” (aka Stichtite in Serpentine). It was named after Robert Sticht, the director of a mining corporation at the time of discovery.

Most tektites are black, but this was such a yummy shade of green that I hadn’t seen before. The Science of Moldavite

A tektite is formed when a meteor strikes the Earth and melts with the elements at the location. Each location’s tektite is unique due to the minerals and plant matter that was in the Earth at the time of the impact. Moldavite is the only tektite that is green (most are black or dark brown). This is due to the makeup of the soil in the Moldau region of the Czech Republic where the crater is located. The impact is estimated to have taken place about 15 million years ago, and local farmers have been digging up pieces of Moldavite from the strewn fields ever since. It has now become rare because its limited source has now been picked pretty clean. Even small specimen will demand a high market price.

**NOTE: Be very careful when purchasing faceted or cabochon Moldavite because it can easily be simulated by cutting bottle-green glass! The cost of this stone is very high so please make sure you’re not paying an exorbitant price for glass. Full disclosure – I got suckered once – don’t let this be you!

To reiterate, a tektite is formed when a meteor strikes the Earth and melts with the elements at the location.  This is an important element that frames how Moldavite affects us. The original meteor sped for who-knows-how-many light years across a wide swath of the Universe. The Science of Rhodochrosite

This gemstone is a manganese carbonate. The mineral siderite gives it the pink color. Much like Malachite, Rhodochrosite is created one layer at a time. In Argentina, the Rhodocrhosite formed as stalactites in the abandoned Incan silver mines. The balance of components in the stone determine the shade of pink in each layer. Even more rare specimen can be very gemmy and translucent making it faceted gemstone quality. These will be highly expensive. It has only been considered a popular stone for jewelry since about 1940. before, this was found in silver mines and discarded.

The name comes from the Greek word ‘rhodochrosis’ meaning – pink colored. This gemstone is found in the United States as well, and the Native Americans used to use this stone as a symbol of love. The Incan culture used to call this stone the “Inca Rose.”

Amazonite is a really gorgeous stone with such a beautiful color. The sea-green contributes to its soothing and comforting nature. The only other gemstones with a similar color are Aquamarine and Turquoise, but Amazonite is the most reasonably priced of the three. The appearance of the stone itself varies based on its mine location. Some samples are soft, smooth, and even shimmery (like the stone on the right in the picture above). Other variations of Amazonite are a deeper blue-green with very noticeable, white albite stripes in it (like the stone of the left). This gemstone is a microcline feldspar and its blue-geen color comes from trace amounts of lead in the microcline. Some samples of Amazonite display the Schiller effect with is a shimmery, iridescent flash in the light.

This stone was formally discovered in Brazil the late 1700s by Alexander von Humboldt. This gemstone adorned the tribes people of the Amazon jungle region and was therefore named Amazonite. Part of the Egyptian Book of the Dead was scribed on Amazonite, and the gemstone was also found among the treasures of Tutankhamen’s tomb.

Unakite is one of my favorite stones because I love the color combination of green and pink. The mossy green and warm pink provide me with a sense of comfort from the Earth. This stone is a combination of Feldspar (pink), Epidote (green) and Quartz (white). It is an accessible stone with a really reasonable price range, but not all that commonly used in crystal practices.
