Turquoise is really the first gemstone I recognized as really popular. When I was growing up, Turquoise jewelry was very sought after and I saw it everywhere. Mostly there was a Southwestern theme to it, but I saw pendants, rings, earrings, belt buckles, and just everything. It’s a fascinating blue color and getting more and more scarce as the mines are getting depleted. The popularity of turquoise in the past really affected its availability now. The Science of Turquoise

Turquoise is a copper aluminum phosphate that is mined in a few places in the world. Genuine Turquoise is mined primarily is New Mexico, Arizona (USA), Tibet, and Iran. It is found a few other places, but these are the most common. The name Turquoise came from the phrase “Turkish stone” because the trade route to Europe passed through Turkey.

**Warning!** Make sure you are purchasing Turquoise from a reputable dealer!! Many sellers dye white stones blue, especially Howlite and Magnesite, and call it Turquoise. There is also a myriad of “pressed” Turquoise available. This is when smaller turquoise bits are hydraulically pressed with metals and stabilized to make a new, larger piece of turquoise.

Historical Significance of Turquoise

Turquoise has an ancient history as being a protective talisman against harm and disease. It has been found in tombs in Ancient Egypt and Greece. Egypt actually depleted their Turquoise mine in 2000 B.C. Hildegard von Bingen, a famous prophet born in 1098 A.D., used it in her healing practices.

Metaphysical Attributes of Turquoise

Turquoise connects Heaven and Earth. It serves as a conduit between spirit and body, so we can access Universal and Inner Wisdom. It is often used in Native American rituals to engage the Spirits in the ceremony (such as rain dances). As a stone of the Throat Chakra, it encourages open, honest communication and authenticity. Turquoise is all about opening up to the Higher Awareness and finding your own Truth. It also releases outdated karmic promises that are no longer serving you and acting as a barriers to spiritual awakening and progress on our paths.

This stone has also been used as a protection talisman. It was said to change color if impending danger is near. It would change color if a lover was unfaithful. Turquoise also protects against electronic pollution and EMF. Turquoise spiritual properties are often used for protection during rituals, ceremonies, astral travel and vision quests. It would protect the physical body from harm, ad the spiritual body from psychic or Spirit attacks. This stone was also used in history to protect people and property against accidents.

Turquoise is a powerful healer and cleanser. It was used throughout ancient times as a mechanism to heal a variety of illness. It purifies our energies, aligns chakras, and cleanses negativity from the body. This is a wonderful foundation for healing practices for both the physical body and the Soul. Rhodochrosite is a beautiful, pink banded stone that is fairly rare now. Good specimens have stunning patterns in various shades of pink. It is highly sought after, so expect to pay a little more for Rhodochrosite jewelry than other more available stones. The Science of Rhodochrosite

This gemstone is a manganese carbonate. The mineral siderite gives it the pink color. Much like Malachite, Rhodochrosite is created one layer at a time. In Argentina, the Rhodocrhosite formed as stalactites in the abandoned Incan silver mines. The balance of components in the stone determine the shade of pink in each layer. Even more rare specimen can be very gemmy and translucent making it faceted gemstone quality. These will be highly expensive. It has only been considered a popular stone for jewelry since about 1940. before, this was found in silver mines and discarded.

Historical Significance of Rhodochrosite

The name comes from the Greek word ‘rhodochrosis’ meaning – pink colored. This gemstone is found in the United States as well, and the Native Americans used to use this stone as a symbol of love. The Incan culture used to call this stone the “Inca Rose.”

Rhodochrosite is a stone of pure open-hearted love for oneself and all others. It is ultimate stone of compassion and unconditional love. It may help to attract soul mates, but it may not be a “forever soul mate” as it brings forth people meant to teach us valuable lessons.

The Rhodochrosite spiritual properties are best known for its ability to help develop self-love and reduce self-criticism. It encourages us to love and accept ourselves as we are. Of course we want to grow, develop, and become our Highest Self, but this stone reminds us that our “work in progress” self is not flawed or insufficient in any way. We are exactly who we are meant to be at this moment.

This loving stone helps to a person to heal from trauma, particularly sexual abuse. It helps one to process and recover from emotional wounds without self-blame. This is a stone of the truth and will force us to look at anything we are repressing in life. Rhodochrosite is an excellent stone to wear in therapy as it helps you to truly examine your issues in an open-hearted, loving manner. This stone helps us move forward to our Highest Good, but it requires that we acknowledge and process that which is holding us back.

This is one of my very favorite new stones.  I learned about it in 2010 and have absolutely adored it ever since.  Purple is my favorite color and this stone has multiple shades! This stone plays with swirls of color, flash and black.  Each piece is different and emits a wonderfully uplifting energy. The Science of Charoite

Charoite comes from only one location, Murun Mountain in Yakutia, Russia. It is a very distinct looking stone with swirls of varying shades of purple and occasionally touched with black. There is sometimes some “flash” or chatoyancy in the stone. It is unmistakable and quite beautiful.

Historical Significance of Charoite

This is a fairly recently discovered stone.  It was initially discovered on the 1940s, but didn’t come to market until the late 1970s.  It has only really become popular as a jeweler’s gem within the last ten years. Geologist’s fear that the exclusivity of its mining location, combined with its new popularity, may soon diminish the supply.

Charoite is most helpful during times of massive change. It helps us to stop, look at a situation as it is, and accept the present moment just as it is. “It is the soul stone that overcomes fear.” It helps us to release overwhelming fear, reduce stress, and enter into a relaxed state.  Often when we are under great stress, we move, move, fix, fix, to try to get rid of the stress, and our actions in this state can aggravate the situation. The Charoite spiritual properties helps us to stop, look at our stressors rationally, and come to acceptance.  Only then can we make wise decisions about how to move forward.

Hematite has been associated most often with the blood. “The name hematite is from the Greek word ‘haimatitis’ which means ‘blood-red.'” That seems strange, right?
