Science of Dalmatian Stone

Dalmatian Stone is most commonly called Dalmatian Jasper, but it is not a Jasper at all! This rock is a mixture of Feldspar (light parts) and Arfvedsonite (black parts). At Mohs 6, it is also softer than Jasper (Mohs 7). This stone is readily available and very affordable. It is often sold in a variety of colors, but just know (because of its softer and more porous nature) that all those various colors are DYED. There are no natural blue, pink or green Dalmatian stones.

Historical Significance of Dalmatian Stone

Dalmatian Stone was discovered in Chihuahua, Mexico, and derived its name because the miners thought it resembled the spots on a Dalmatian dog. It has historically been used as a protection stone in necklaces, talisman and amulets.

Dalmatian Stone’s unique spiritual attribute is its ability to help us tap into our Inner Child and find time to Play! Tektite is an fascinating glass formation that results from meteor impacts and is has an amazing energy when held. A tektite is formed when a meteor strikes the Earth and melts with the elements at the location. Each location’s tektite is unique due to the minerals and plant matter that was in the Earth at the time of the impact. Most Tektites are black or dark brown in appearance, but there are green (Moldative) and golden (Libyan) varieties as well. Rough Tektite is distinctive in appearance as it is mottled and contains internal bubbles. Tektite is general is readily available and affordable (except for Moldavite and Libyan tektites).

To reiterate, a tektite is formed when a meteor strikes the Earth and melts with the elements at the location.  This is an important element that frames how Tektite affects us. The original meteor sped for who-knows-how-many light years across a wide swath of the Universe. It has connected with the energies as environments throughout space and has collected alot of Universal minerals, vibrations, and information. So each piece contains elements from deep space and is connected with the breadth of the knowledge of the Universe. It has “touched” the expanse of the Universe and it will help us determine our “place” in this existence. Apache Tears are another gemstone that I grew up with while rock hunting in Oregon. These small, beautiful stones are in the Obsidian family. This stone has always felt so soothing and gentle to me and now that I have learned so much more about gemstones – now I know why. Apache Tears are really just Obsidian that has formed in a different way. When the force of the lava splashes the lava into the air it cools instantly in little round pebbles. Apache Tears are much smaller and more translucent that large chunks of Obsidian.

Historical Significance of Apache Tears

The origin of the name for Apache Tears is fairly well known. In 1870s, U.S. Cavalry attacked a tribe of Apache Indians in Surprise, AZ. At least 50 tribe members died right away and another 25 fought til their deaths. It is said the remaining wives and children of the fallen tribesmen wept and wept, and those tears turned into black jewels as they struck the ground.

The most powerful of the Apache Tears spiritual properties is support during the grieving period. They create a safe and secure energy field in which we can process and heal without getting overcome by such strong emotions.

Apache Tears are a softer, gentler form of Obsidian. It is extremely useful if you are working through really deep traumas and need to take it slowly. Like Obsidian, Apache Tears are an excellent grounding stone connecting the energy of the Heart to the Earth. It is a strong protection stone, protecting one from physical and emotional harm, as well as negative energies. However, it works slowly and steadily. Obsidian can feel rather sudden and abrupt, and sometimes that is necessary when we need quick assistance. But Apache Tears ease us into a state of security and safety.

Apache Tears also help to facilitate forgiveness and letting go of the past. Anger and bitterness from the past can trap us in a cycle of suffering, but Apache Tear help us recognize the cycle and break out if it.

This is a newer gemstone on the market and it is a really brilliant stone! Its coloring – black, grey, white, yellow and orange – appear to be a visual representation of the volcano from which it is mined! The Science of Bumblebee Jasper

This gemstone is not actually a Jasper at all. It is comprised of colored bands of Calcite that get their color from sulfur and volcanic ash. Bumblebee “Jasper” (likely named for the black and yellow stripes like bees) is mined in an active volcano! Mount Papandayan, West Java, Indonesia. Given the single location where this stone is found, and its difficulty obtaining it from the hot vents in the volcano, this gemstone is on the pricier side. The tumble stone in the picture above was $20. However, it is a beautiful and powerful stone, so totally worth the cost.

This unusual gemstone one of the oldest gemstones in the World, and is only found in Greenland. Given the weather in Greenland, it can only be mined during the warmer months, so there isn’t a huge amount of this on the market. It is comprised of Anthophyllite and Gedrite. Mostly black in color, the internal crystal structure has a lot of flash in the light. This is a spectacular stone to look at in the sunlight!

This is a gemstone that instantly fascinated me. First, it’s found in Australia, and the cabochons created from this stone can display beautiful patterns of these Earthy and Firey colors. It was more expensive and difficult to obtain when I first learned of it, but I’m very glad that it has become much easier and affordable to purchase. The Science of Mookaite

This is a stone that is formed exclusively in Australia. It is often grouped in the Jasper family, but it is not a Jasper. It is a porcellanite. It comes in a mix of red, yellow, white and grey. The colors are formed due to the iron oxide/hydroxide in the soil where it is collected.

This is a rather new addition to the gemstone market. It started appearing in about 2010 and has become quite popular since then. It is names after Mooka Station, in Western Australia, where it was originally discovered.

Smoky Quartz Spiritual Properties: Stone of Stability

Smoky Quartz – (Root Chakra) – (Zodiac of Capricorn & Sagittarius)

This is a gemstone I use if I’m having trouble focusing during meditation. It is mildly grounding, but also uplifting, so it helps me release thought and just be. I find it very soothing to hold and tend to meditate with it when my mood is dark and I feel like releasing those heavy feelings. The Science of Smoky Quartz

Smoky Quartz is a sibling to Citrine, Amethyst, and the rest of the Quartz family. This is a dark, but translucent, gemstone, so it has many of the properties of Onyx or Obsidian, but much gentler. The smoky color is caused, not by another mineral as is common, but by gamma rays. Smoky quartz can range from very light grey to fairly dark (as in the picture above).

Historical Significance of Smoky Quartz

This stone was used often as a talisman, and the belief was that the stone would turn darker in the presence of danger. Smoky Quartz was also a stone used for mourning and times of grieving.

Metaphysical Attributes of Smoky Quartz

Smoky Quartz is one of the black stones that are always known for grounding and balancing the Root Chakra. This quartz has a much gentler effect than the pure black stones, so if you are in need of finding your center without feeling weighed down, this is a an excellent choice. Smoky Quartz provides grounding, centering, and a sense of stability. It is excellent for use in meditation is you are finding it hard to focus. It enables you to clear your mind easier, provide that connection to the Earth, while still allowing you to open up to Higher Awareness.

This gemstone is like a gentle, but firm security blanket. It helps to reduce fear, stress, anxiety and depression. Smoky Quartz supports us through all of the difficult emotions. It is a wonderful stone for mourning and grieving. It keeps us grounded as we process our emotions about the loss. This stone also helps to release fear of failure.

Finally, Smoky Quartz is amazing at transmuting negativity into positivity. It allows you to leave behind anything that no longer serves you.
