This is a stone I would collect on the shores of the Oregon cost as I was a kid, so it is very familiar and nurturing to me as an adult. Turquoise is a copper aluminum phosphate that is mined in a few places in the world. Genuine Turquoise is mined primarily is New Mexico, Arizona (USA), Tibet, and Iran. It is found a few other places, but these are the most common. The name Turquoise came from the phrase “Turkish stone” because the trade route to Europe passed through Turkey.

**Warning!** Make sure you are purchasing Turquoise from a reputable dealer!! Many sellers dye white stones blue, especially Howlite and Magnesite, and call it Turquoise. There is also a myriad of “pressed” Turquoise available. This is when smaller turquoise bits are hydraulically pressed with metals and stabilized to make a new, larger piece of turquoise.

Turquoise has an ancient history as being a protective talisman against harm and disease. It has been found in tombs in Ancient Egypt and Greece. Egypt actually depleted their Turquoise mine in 2000 B.C. Hildegard von Bingen, a famous prophet born in 1098 A.D., used it in her healing practices.

This is a newer gemstone on the market and it is a really brilliant stone! Its coloring – black, grey, white, yellow and orange – appear to be a visual representation of the volcano from which it is mined! The Science of Bumblebee Jasper

This gemstone is not actually a Jasper at all. It is comprised of colored bands of Calcite that get their color from sulfur and volcanic ash. Bumblebee “Jasper” (likely named for the black and yellow stripes like bees) is mined in an active volcano! Mount Papandayan, West Java, Indonesia. Given the single location where this stone is found, and its difficulty obtaining it from the hot vents in the volcano, this gemstone is on the pricier side. The tumble stone in the picture above was $20. However, it is a beautiful and powerful stone, so totally worth the cost.

This unusual gemstone one of the oldest gemstones in the World, and is only found in Greenland. Given the weather in Greenland, it can only be mined during the warmer months, so there isn’t a huge amount of this on the market. It is comprised of Anthophyllite and Gedrite. Mostly black in color, the internal crystal structure has a lot of flash in the light. This is a spectacular stone to look at in the sunlight!

Scolecite Spiritual Properties: Stone of Universal Connection

Scolecite entered my life about 10 years ago when it was very new on the market. I was fascinated by it. It’s becoming more available which is quite a blessing! Not only does it have a beautiful, light energy, but it looks like Rainbow Moonstone and Selenite had a gorgeous baby. The Science of Scolecite

This crystal forms in fans, like Black Kyanite, but is much more fragile. You can find them in the crystalline fan form, tumbled, cut into cabochons, or even, very rarely, faceted. The best specimen are nearly colorless and transparent. Next best are ones that are all white and shimmery. Finally, you’ll find peach colored Scolecite, or a mix of peach and white.

Historical Significance of Scolecite

The name is a really interesting part of researching this stone. The name comes from the Greek word skolex, which means ‘worm.’ It gets this name based on “its worm-like reaction to a blowpipe test.” What?? This just means when heated during the blowpipe test (which is a test to identify certain gems), the crystals dry and dehydrate, then start to curl in on themselves, looking like… worms.

Metaphysical Attributes of Scolecite

Meditating with Scolecite invokes a sense of total peace. This is its primary quality – Peace. It helps us develop a sense of connection and peace with all. The peace can be with people, current situations, energetic, or emotional. This stone dissolves anxiety and fear. Anything that is causing stress in our lives can be eased with Scolecite. This crystal opens the Heart Chakra and connects it to the Crown Chakra, so we feel this heart-deep connection to life and energy through the entire Universe. Sit in a seated meditation position, holding the Scolecite in your less dominant hand to receive its energy.  Really feel the support of the cushion or floor beneath you.
