Mookaite – (Root, Sacral & Solar Plexus Chakra) – (Zodiac of Leo)

This is a gemstone that instantly fascinated me. First, it’s found in Australia, and the cabochons created from this stone can display beautiful patterns of these Earthy and Firey colors. It was more expensive and difficult to obtain when I first learned of it, but I’m very glad that it has become much easier and affordable to purchase. The Science of Mookaite

This is a stone that is formed exclusively in Australia. It is often grouped in the Jasper family, but it is not a Jasper. It is a porcellanite. It comes in a mix of red, yellow, white and grey. The colors are formed due to the iron oxide/hydroxide in the soil where it is collected.

Historical Significance of Mookaite

This is a rather new addition to the gemstone market. It started appearing in about 2010 and has become quite popular since then. It is names after Mooka Station, in Western Australia, where it was originally discovered.

This is a stone I associate with The Fool and The Chariot in the Tarot. Both of these cards speak to moving forward on your Path. This is a gemstone that is extremely supportive during new beginnings and adventures. It helps us move forward with confidence and instills a sense of calm during this change. This stone encourages flexibility, versatility, and risk taking. It supports taking the necessary actions to move in your chosen direction.

Mookaite is a stone of the Earth and Nature. It enables you to find support and energy through direct connection to the earth. If you go outside with a piece of Mookaite, it will allow you to feel the energy around you that is alive and infinite. You can channel that energy to help you feel more confident, invigorated, and safe. This stone also helps you to connect and communicate with ancestor spirits, nature spirits, and animal guides.

Kyanite is primarily found in long, bladed crystal form. It is a lovely shade of light to deep blue, but it is also found in a light green color,black, and even orange. This stone is unusual because it has a wide range of hardness. You won’t often see it faceted, because the varying hardness makes it mostly unstable for cutting. However, some specimen are hard enough to cut into stunning faceted pieces.

The name comes from the Greek word kynos meaning “blue.” Like Aquamarine, its water blue color made this a popular stone for sailors to wear for luck.

Rhodochrosite is a beautiful, pink banded stone that is fairly rare now. Good specimens have stunning patterns in various shades of pink. It is highly sought after, so expect to pay a little more for Rhodochrosite jewelry than other more available stones. The Science of Rhodochrosite

This gemstone is a manganese carbonate. The mineral siderite gives it the pink color. Much like Malachite, Rhodochrosite is created one layer at a time. In Argentina, the Rhodocrhosite formed as stalactites in the abandoned Incan silver mines. The balance of components in the stone determine the shade of pink in each layer. Even more rare specimen can be very gemmy and translucent making it faceted gemstone quality. These will be highly expensive. It has only been considered a popular stone for jewelry since about 1940. before, this was found in silver mines and discarded.

The name comes from the Greek word ‘rhodochrosis’ meaning – pink colored. This gemstone is found in the United States as well, and the Native Americans used to use this stone as a symbol of love. The Incan culture used to call this stone the “Inca Rose.”

Amazonite is a really gorgeous stone with such a beautiful color. The sea-green contributes to its soothing and comforting nature. The only other gemstones with a similar color are Aquamarine and Turquoise, but Amazonite is the most reasonably priced of the three. The appearance of the stone itself varies based on its mine location. Some samples are soft, smooth, and even shimmery (like the stone on the right in the picture above). Other variations of Amazonite are a deeper blue-green with very noticeable, white albite stripes in it (like the stone of the left). This gemstone is a microcline feldspar and its blue-geen color comes from trace amounts of lead in the microcline. Some samples of Amazonite display the Schiller effect with is a shimmery, iridescent flash in the light.

This stone was formally discovered in Brazil the late 1700s by Alexander von Humboldt. This gemstone adorned the tribes people of the Amazon jungle region and was therefore named Amazonite. It has been been used around the world for at least 4000 years. It was very popular in Ancient Egypt. Part of the Egyptian Book of the Dead was scribed on Amazonite, and the gemstone was also found among the treasures of Tutankhamen’s tomb.

Iolite is an indigo blue gemstone also known as Cordierite. There are many different qualities of Iolite. Some are facted gemstone quality, while some are more opaque and work better tumbled for meditation use. Very high quality Iolite can be confused with Sapphire. This is a lovely stone to observe in the sunlight as it changes color depending on how the light strikes it. This attribute is known as Pleochroism. Some specimen have a shimmery quality known as Aventurescence.

Ancient Greeks and Romans would use Iolite interchangeably with Sapphire. Native American shamans have used Iolite during vision quests to ensure accurate visions and to not be caught in illusions.

The Science of Unakite

This stone is a combination of Feldspar (pink), Epidote (green) and Quartz (white). It is an accessible stone with a really reasonable price range, but not all that commonly used in crystal practices.

This is a gemstone I use if I’m having trouble focusing during meditation. It is mildly grounding, but also uplifting, so it helps me release thought and just be. I find it very soothing to hold and tend to meditate with it when my mood is dark and I feel like releasing those heavy feelings. The Science of Smoky Quartz

Smoky Quartz is a sibling to Citrine, Amethyst, and the rest of the Quartz family. This is a dark, but translucent, gemstone, so it has many of the properties of Onyx or Obsidian, but much gentler. The smoky color is caused, not by another mineral as is common, but by gamma rays. Smoky quartz can range from very light grey to fairly dark (as in the picture above).

Historical Significance of Smoky Quartz

This stone was used often as a talisman, and the belief was that the stone would turn darker in the presence of danger. Smoky Quartz was also a stone used for mourning and times of grieving.

This gemstone is like a gentle, but firm security blanket. It helps to reduce fear, stress, anxiety and depression. Smoky Quartz supports us through all of the difficult emotions. It is a wonderful stone for mourning and grieving. It keeps us grounded as we process our emotions about the loss. This stone also helps to release fear of failure.

Finally, Smoky Quartz is amazing at transmuting negativity into positivity. It allows you to leave behind anything that no longer serves you. As a teenager I lived in Cairo, Egypt, for a few years and became really familiar with Lapis (and Alexandrite, too). I would see it for sale everywhere, as carved statues, inlay, and jewelry. It was one of the first gemstones that really struck me with it’s utter brilliance. Such a rich blue with gold-like specks was a stone I absolutely envisioned for Egyptian royalty. Luckily, this is a fairly accessible stone with a reasonable price range, so we can all enjoy Lapis Lazuli now. The Science of Lapis Lazuli

Lapis Lazuli is primarily composed of a mineral called Lazurite. The Lazurite is combined with a mix of various other minerals, (the “gold” flecks are Pyrite) and the balance of certain minerals does affect the value of a particular stone. There are specimen with more white Calcite mixed in that is less valuable than the deep blue examples with lots of Pyrite. This stone is very sensitive to heat and chemicals, so don’t use a chemical metal cleaner near it, or expose it to hot, soapy water while house cleaning.

Historical Significance of Lapis Lazuli

Lapis is a gemstone that has been revered for ages! Reports of Lapis date back to 5000BC. The name comes from a combination of words – Arabic azul for “sky,” and Latin lapis for “stone.” As it is the color of the sky, people thought they could connect to the Heavens and channel the power of Gods by using Lapis. Leaders all over the world included Lapis Lazuli in worship objects, royal decoration, and in burial tombs and crypts. Ancient Buddhists meditated with Lapis to repel evil thoughts. In the Middle Ages, Lapis was ground down to create the color pigment ‘ultramarine.’

Lapis is a true stone of awakening and awareness. It helps us to access and focus understanding, wisdom, and intuition. Primarily, it facilitates confronting your own truth and accepting it for what it is. If you are denying and repressing something in your life, Lapis will pull it forth for you to see.
