Tiger Eye is a stone I’ve been fascinated with since I was a child.  The lovely golden bands that flash and shimmer in the light reminded me of a precious nugget of gold. The look of the stone changes with every shift in the light. Although this stone seems like it must be in a class of its own, it is actually part of the Quartz family!  This stone is a popular stone for men’s jewelry.

Maybe because of its eye-like appearance, this stone was historically used as a talisman to ward off negative energies and the “evil eye.” Its gold appearance reminded people of wealth so was often worn to attract prosperity.

Moonstone is an orthoclase gem that has phenomenal flash.  The orthoclase is layered with feldspar, and the refraction of light between those layers is what causes the shimmery glow (called adularescence).  Moonstone is available in a variety of colors: off-white, beige, peach, grey, blue and rainbow.

Historical Significance of Moonstone

Originally called selenitis because it was associated with the Greek moon goddess, Selene. It also had the name adularia due to its discovery near Mt. Adular in Switzerland.  In Arab countries it was used for fertility and to ensure large families. In Hindu belief, the moonstone was solidified pieces of actual moon beams.  It was a birth stone for those born on Moon’s Day (Monday). It has long been associated with magic and rituals that depended on the phases of the moon.

Physically, moonstone is reflective, and spiritually it also allows us to reflect on our opportunities and intuitive wisdom. It allows us to think before we react.  This stone helps us to recognize new beginnings. This is one of my very favorite new stones.  I learned about it in 2010 and have absolutely adored it ever since.  Purple is my favorite color and this stone has multiple shades! The Science of Charoite

Charoite comes from only one location, Murun Mountain in Yakutia, Russia. It is a very distinct looking stone with swirls of varying shades of purple and occasionally touched with black. There is sometimes some “flash” or chatoyancy in the stone. It is unmistakable and quite beautiful.

Historical Significance of Charoite

This is a fairly recently discovered stone.  It was initially discovered on the 1940s, but didn’t come to market until the late 1970s.  It has only really become popular as a jeweler’s gem within the last ten years. Geologist’s fear that the exclusivity of its mining location, combined with its new popularity, may soon diminish the supply.

Charoite is most helpful during times of massive change. It helps us to stop, look at a situation as it is, and accept the present moment just as it is. “It is the soul stone that overcomes fear.” It helps us to release overwhelming fear, reduce stress, and enter into a relaxed state.  Often when we are under great stress, we move, move, fix, fix, to try to get rid of the stress, and our actions in this state can aggravate the situation. Sodalite is one of my very favorite stones.  Its blue is so vibrant and majestic.  The stone itself looks like blue and white marble. I’d love to have an entire floor or table made out of this crisp blue “marble.”  There is something calming and soothing about holding this stone. My tensions ease away and I feel like I can breathe.  As it opens the Throat Chakra, I can easily understand how I can take a fuller, natural breath after meditating with Sodalite. Although Sodalite reminds me of marble, it is from the feldspathoid family (Lapis Lazuli is related here).  A stone this vivid blue is truly rare in nature and is the most reasonably priced of all the natural blue stones.

The name came from the Ancient Greek words soda lithos, meaning “salt stone,” because Sodalite contains a fair amount of salt.  The Greeks also considered this a stone of the artists and singers, as it opened the mind and allowed creativity to flow.

Malachite is found wherever copper is mined. It is formed when the lime in the water interacts with the copper and slowly creates this beautiful green stone one layer at a time.  (Azurite is also formed with copper this way and hence why Azurite-Malachite stones exist)

Malachite is one of the oldest power stones.  Ancient Egyptians used Malachite often in amulets and in headdresses believing that it would help them think clearly and rule wisely.  The Egyptian Book of the Dead mentions green stones raining from the heavens, so they used Malachite to connect with the energies of Heaven. The Egyptians also ground it up to use as a cosmetic, paint, and dye.

It is such a wonderful, overall purifying and protective stone and is easy to find in many forms.  Selenite comes in large chunks and wands, but can also be easily carved into statues, candle holders, eggs, and charging plates. If you’re a serious crystal worker, I would recommend having a good collection of Selenite on hand. Selenite is a variety of Gypsum that forms into long, slender crystals.  It is quite delicate and fragile.  You should never clean Selenite with anything but water – no detergents, chemicals or salts – these will dissolve Selenite and cause it to fall apart.

Selenite was named from the Greek word Greek selēnitēs, which means stone of the moon. Sunstone is the mood lifter.  It is said to help lift depression and be particularly effective for dissipating seasonal affective disorder.  In Oregon and Washington, this is a pretty common ailment, so the extra abundance of the Sunstone deposits provides ample stones for SAD relief.  If you have a difficult time waking in the morning, keep a Sunstone near your bed that you can hold after your alarm has gone off to help give you that extra energy to get out of bed. Hematite has been associated most often with the blood. “The name hematite is from the Greek word ‘haimatitis’ which means ‘blood-red.'” That seems strange, right? It’s a shiny, black mineral… But, even though Hematite seems very black in color, ground up Hematite is actually Red, and is commonly used as a red pigment.

This dark black/red stone is associated with the Root Chakra, and is a natural source of grounding and stability. Hematite is the Stone of the Mind and is perfect when one is feeling “scattered.” It helps to focus the mind and improve memory. As mentioned before, Hematite is associated with blood, so it is said to help regenerate red blood cells.  If you are donating blood (or receiving a transfusion), wearing this mineral on you afterwards can help with recovery.  As this stone is both grounding and soothing, having some in your pillow at night can help to fall into a deep, sound sleep.

Sit in a seated meditation position, holding the Hematite in your less dominant hand to receive its energy.  Really feel the support of the cushion or floor beneath you. You are grounded and supported by the Earth’s energies.  Imagine energetic roots flowing down into the soft, cool Earth.  The Earth’s energy flows up through the roots, up your body, and settles as a gentle pool of energy in your mind.  Repeat these words.  “I am calm, focused, and positive.” Alternately, hold a Hematite mala and chant this mantra 108 times.

Rose Quartz has long been associated with Love.  It was supposedly imbued with the warm, pink color by Eros, God of Love, to inspire love and attraction between people.

This stone is by far the strongest Heart Healer in the crystal world.  The rose quartz spiritual properties are immediate, powerful and can tackle even the earliest traumas. Rose quartz is a stone to wear on you if you are working through break-ups and divorce, when you need some relief from heart break.  It also helps us to work toward forgiveness. It increases love and compassion for all, so if someone has harmed you and you have been having trouble letting go, this stone will encourage healing and forgiveness.

As mentioned, rose quartz can assist with healing childhood traumas and broken relationships.  If you grew up in a home that didn’t foster love and you feel inhibited now – this stone can help release those barriers around the heart.  Take care with using rose quartz as it will initiate the processing of old wounds and cause a release of the pain and suffering you’ve been holding onto.  Don’t hold back!  Releasing the pain and emotion helps you learn from it and let it go. Be prepared to have a support system available when doing deep meditations and healing with rose quartz. Have a friend standing by, or your favorite blanket and soothing music to help ease you back into the world after an emotional release.

Rose quartz is an amazing crystal to encourage self-compassion.  We are often very hard on ourselves; self-critical, unloving, unforgiving, and blaming.  Holding rose quartz, closing your eyes, and breathing deeply will allow our critical feelings about ourselves to soften and release. You are beautiful, you are loving, you are perfect just as you are.  This is the love letter from rose quartz to our souls.

Rose quartz helps us to forgive and love; therefore, inviting peace, soothing and tranquility into our lives.  This helps to reduce stress and tension.  Rose quartz is also said to protect against radiation and improve circulation (which makes this a wonderful crystal during a detox).
